Never Try, Never Know — Starting a new journey!
I am Katja Bouwman, a Dutch street photographer living in Zurich. Born and raised in the Netherlands, I moved to Switzerland in 2003. My first experience with photography came as a teenager when I transformed our bathroom into a darkroom, using black garbage bags to block out the light. I loved the process and the magic of watching the first tones of my creation vaguely appear. During my pharmacy studies and work as a hospital pharmacist across the German-speaking regions of Switzerland, my life became filled with professional responsibilities and family, leaving little room for artistic expression.
In 2023, following a severe burnout, I started taking photos with my mobile phone during long walks through nature and the streets of Zurich. This is how I rediscovered my love for photography. Just six months later, I bought my first digital camera — a Fuji X-T5 — and shifted from random color shots to a focus on black and white street photography, where I found my true passion.
For me, street photography is a form of meditation — a mix of mindfulness, focus and observation. It’s all about being fully present and noticing those little moments that tell powerful stories. The instant I press the shutter button to freeze time is incredibly satisfying. Through my lens, I want to share my unique perspective on the world in black and white with you — from joyful, light moments to the darker, more somber tones and all the shades of grey in between. Black and white
Focussing on black and white photography came naturally to me and I think anyone who knows me personally would say this doesn’t surprise them! There is something timeless about black and white street photography that I really love. Without color, you can focus on shapes, lines and patterns. I especially love the mood and atmosphere of nighttime shots. When I’m out on the streets, I usually shoot with my Fuji X-T5 in Acros mode, emphasizing the blacks by lowering my exposure.
Never try, never know
“Never try, never know” turned into a family motto during our summer vacation in Thailand in 2022. On a beautiful evening on the beach of Koh Tao, my daughter was invited to join a group of fire artists. Initially hesitant and shy, she found the courage to participate when the performer said to her, “Never try, never know.” Since that day, we've embraced those words and repeat them whenever we face a challenge in our daily lives.
With this phrase in mind, I jumped into the unknown pursuing my dream of becoming a photographer!
Exhibitions and awards
After attending various photography workshops and spending countless hours on the streets, I started to develop my own unique style. This process took about a year. In May 2024, I started participating in national and international photography competitions and I’m excited to say that it went quite well! Here you can take a look at my award winning images!
“A break from adolescence” received an honorable mention in the Open Category of the Minimalist Photography Awards and was exhibited in Berlin at the SPC Awards
“Going Up” was selected in the Top 50 and displayed in the Swiss Photo Club Awards Exhibition in the Photobastei Gallery Zurich
